Brief History or the Mexican War Streets

The Mexican War Streets, originally known as “The Buena Vista Tract”, were designed by Alexanger Hays between 1848 and 1855 in the city of Allegheny, Pennsylvania before it was annexed by Pittsburgh.

At the time, the area consisted of homes from some of the wealthiest families.  The area became known as the Mexican War Streets because the streets were named after battles and generals of the Mexican-American War.

In 1975, the National Register of Historic Places placed the Mexican War Streets Historic District on its list.  Originally, there were 188 building on the list, which now consists of over 288 buildings.

To help raise funds and preserve the history of the area, the Mexican War Streets Society has help its Annual House and Garden Tour.  Take a step in the past and help preserve this historic area of Pittsburgh for the future by attending the Annual House and Garden Tour.
